KETO | Day 8 – Finding Joy in Life + How to Exercise your Joy Muscle

Welcome to day eight, where we will talk about finding joy in life and once found, how to exercise your joy muscle. Yes, it’s a thing, well according to me anyways. I will explain.

Thinking about these kinds of things is part of the plan to move you towards eating low carb keto. In 14 days we will take 7 easy actions that make it possible and prepare you to give low carb a go! We also have 7 mindset moments to focus on how we think about preparing for low carb keto eating. Getting our mind engaged with our desire to eat low carb keto is super important.

If you missed day one, the first action is back here. There are also two introduction videos. Part A is here and part b is here. Then all the other days up to day eight and beyond will be here.

So this year has been a horror show of cancelled plans, disruption, economic gloom and suffering and sadly death by COVID19. So how do I expect you to find the joy in your day? Well for me joy, like happiness, is an inside job. I’m not waiting for someone to make me happy. I’m also not waiting for someone to bring me joy, I find it myself. Several times a day, every day. I believe in vitamin JOY!

I don’t want to rely on food anymore for my dose of joy. Don’t get me wrong, I still get joy out of low carb keto eating, but I don’t eat to find joy. No. Not any more. I want my joy carb free, low cost or no cost and not dependant on other people.

Watch this short video and hear me talk about finding joy for free, in abundance and on your own terms. My joy bucket will be different to yours. Right at the bottom of this post, you will find examples of what brings me joy. I also wrote more on finding happiness and joy here. Finding joy in your every day is about developing a new pro joy habit. More after the video.

I firmly believe that by making a choice to find joy in the little things you are supporting bigger changes in your life, like going low carb keto. Once you have made your list of the top ten little, small, independent of others things that bring you joy, then you need to practice finding them.

The video has five steps to repeat over 14 days to form a joy habit. Habits only take a small amount of effort to form, much more to undo. But rest assured this habit, the joy habit, will not bite you ON the bum or make you fat. Carbs make you fat. In fact, finding joy and making it a three times a day habit will add such value to your holistic self you be a better little human for it.I promise, cross my heart, stick a needle in my eye etc etc.

Finding joy permeates all aspects of your life. You are becoming or enforcing, being a glass half full person. So now you have your joy list, find your joy three times a day, for 14 days and watch your joy muscle grow. Cultivate your joy habit for life long use.

The aim here is to create a real connection between finding joy and supporting your pathway to a better version of self. Here’s a lovely article connecting finding joy to mental health.

So you have your list and you are practising every day. This is great! Joy is like any muscle, if we don’t use it we lose it. And like any muscle as you use it it develops a muscle memory. Muscle memory is a process of reorganizing and rewiring our nerves to make the brain and body connection stronger, faster and more accurate. When we practice a new movement over and over again, we are literally establishing a new neural pathway within our central nervous system. It’s like getting into a new groove. I think we can do the same thing with joy.

As finding joy becomes a repeated pattern in your day you find even more joy. We have all heard the saying that unhappiness breeds unhappiness, or misery loves company. Well on the flip, finding joy builds our capacity to find even more joy in the every day. Isn’t that cool.

This is also super helpful on really crap days. We all have really crap days. So when you have extra joy in the bucket it can go someway to dampening or offsetting the effect of sh#t sandwich days. You have a buffer zone, or an inbuilt resilience provided by your big ole joy muscle. So don’t delay, develop joy today!

I so much believe in the power of self discovered joy that I did these little flash cards for myself to keep my joy triggers top of mind. Comment with your top three joy triggers and I will make some little joy cards for you. Just because I can and I care.

As you know there are seven easy, actionable steps over 14 days that we are going to get you ready to kick off a low cab keto eating style. Here’s the full plan. Day nine is measurement day. There is no fear or shame in this, as it’s just a stepping stone forward to somewhere better. Hope to see you there.

There are lots of handy guides here on the blog, but this action plan to prepare for low carb keto pulls them all together in a logical step by step sequence. A little bit of preparation goes a long way to bolstering your likely success. And I’m speaking from my own experiences here.

So jump in now, go back and watch the introduction videos if you missed them. Then join me for 14 daily videos as I offer up my experience as something to build on for your own success.

As always, just a gentle reminder that this is my pathway, and it may not be yours. I’m sharing to add value to your journey. Said with love, kindness and zero judgement.
