ACTION 4: TIME FOR THE LOW CARB PANTRY STOCKTAKE
Hello and welcome to day seven, the day to get your low carb pantry sorted. Or more accurately time to remove high carb foods from your pantry and fridge. This is the fourth action of seven that we are going to take to get you prepared for low carb keto.
As you know in 14 days we are taking 7 easy peasy actions that prepare you to give low carb keto a good ole go. This is action 4 and it is the first meaty one. It’s a wee bit harder than the first three as those actions were kind of passive in comparison. But it’s still an easy concept to action and one that will really help you stick on your low carb keto pathway.
WHAT DOES A LOW CARB PANTRY LOOK LIKE
So a great place to start is to grab your grocery list from action one and your food lists from action two. Missed them? Well lucky for you they are right here, action one and action two. Go grab them. Start here as these resources combined will give you a thorough rundown on what should be in your party and fridge. Plus more importantly what should be out. More on that soon.
WHAT TO KEEP IN A LOW CARB PANTRY
Any of the items on the shopping list that are in your pantry can stay. Same with the low carb options on the food group guides. If you have something that you think might be low carb, but I have not listed it, then you are going to have to read the label. Here’s a great wee guide for USA food labels. Plus, here is a great guide to Aussie and Kiwi labels and the difference between how we write them and the USA does.
There is another techie way to check how many carbs are in your favourite food. Download one of the free apps. Lots of low carb peeps use Carb Manager. I use KetoDiet app. I don’t know which is better, I think they do the same job. Plus I only use the free app.
WHAT NOT TO KEEP IN YOUR LOW CARB PANTRY
So let’s just say there are no ‘bad foods’, only food that won’t fit in your daily carb count. So it’s time to say bye bye bye, like the song, to the following items:
- sugar in all its forms – there’s about 56 names for sugar, we can add white death and make it 57
- potato and below ground veggies
- soy products
- glutenous flours, premixes
- seed oils
- corn, beans
- yeast extract, MSG
- cereals, oats, muesli bars, breakfast bars
- packet soups, meal base sauces, frozen ready meals
- sauces, dressings and marinates high in sugars
- cakes, biscuits, crackers
- chips, junkie foods, chocolates, lollies, treats
- low fat products (we know fat doesn’t make us fat, sugar does)
- juices, soft drinks, milk drinks
- tinned fruits, dried fruits
- honey, peanut butter with sugar, nut butters with sugar, jams
- tropical fruits
There you go, the main carb sources to move on from your life. There’s also alcohol. Alcohol won’t help you lose weight, so if that’s your goal ditch it for the now.
Time for today’s video … just to get you in the mood to face the low carb pantry stocktake. Come on, you know you want to!
WHY DO WE DO THIS LOW CARB PANTRY STOCKTAKE
We are preparing for meal planning. It’s easier to plan your first week of low carb keto if you know what you already have in the pantry and fridge and what is missing.
The other reason we do this is to remove or reduce the likelihood of going ‘off the low carb keto pathway’. Whatever your triggers were in the past to want high carb foods they won’t have magically gone. You will still have good days, bad days, frustrating days and more. So we just don’t want high carb foods around. When you slip off the pathway, slip off into the macadamias or cheese, not the chocolate cookies. Although there are heaps of keto chocolate cookie recipes out there, but more on that in meal planning.
WHAT IS NEXT NOW WE HAVE THE PANTRY SORTED …
So days one to seven are done. We are HALF WAY there! Day eight is a mindset moment. And it’s one of my favs, finding joy!
